Silicon based OLED is currently experiencing an investment boom.
The silicon-based OLED industry chain includes upstream raw materials, midstream OLED panel manufacturing, and downstream OLED applications. The upstream includes major links such as silicon substrate, driver IC, metal materials, organic materials, packaging materials, etc., providing raw materials and equipment for midstream OLED microdisplay manufacturers. After midstream manufacturers manufacture display panels, their products can be applied to downstream application products such as head mounted display products, smart wearable products, industrial instruments, medical instruments, etc.
With the increasing demand for silicon-based OLED display panels such as AR glasses, VR helmets, infrared detectors, and 3D medical devices, the market is widely optimistic about the prospects of silicon-based OLED.
European and American companies entered the market earlier, and currently there are few manufacturers worldwide engaged in the development and production of OLED microdisplays. Mainly concentrated in European and American countries, including eMagin from the United States, Micro Emissive Displays (MED) from the United Kingdom, Fraunhofer IPMS from Germany, Micro OLED from France, Sony from Japan, as well as the three giants of silicon-based OLEDs in China: Ored, BOE, and Shiya Technology. The upstream industry chain of silicon-based OLED is mainly controlled by Japan and South Korea, while the midstream has formed a competitive landscape where eMagin, MicroOLED, and Ored compete with each other.
Multiple giant companies are promoting the development and mass production of silicon-based OLED technology. Since May 2020, domestic display manufacturers have been investing frequently in the field of silicon-based OLED, with a production line investment scale exceeding 20 billion yuan in 2020. Anhui Xitai Technology invested 12 billion yuan in Huzhou, Zhejiang to build a silicon-based OLED micro display production line project with an annual output of 250000 pieces.
As of December 2020, BOE has built an 8-inch silicon-based OLED production line and has also invested in building the world's largest 12 inch silicon-based OLED production line.
